phpList – Manual Installation and Configuration

When installing a new application for the first time, I have found it best to install it in a sandbox environment to test the functionality to validate it will meet my needs. I would recommend not having the mentality to only take a few hours or a weekend to completely evaluate everything and most important, document your process. Remember, for every modification that you make in your sandbox environment, you will need to make it in the production environment. Not to mention, if there are issues in the future, you have a documentation path of everything done on your system.
